From Teacher to Entrepreneur: How Govt Schemes Empower Rural Women in UP
Government initiatives are actively supporting rural women in their journey toward self-reliance and financial independence, according to officials in Lucknow. A senior government representative highlighted the inspiring story of Kirti from Hamirpur district as a prime example of this transformative impact.
The Journey from Social Work to Business Leadership
Kirti, who previously worked as both a teacher and social worker, made a pivotal decision in 2018 by joining a women's self-help group. This move marked the beginning of her path toward financial independence and the creation of her own professional identity.
"I believe clean and nutritious food is the foundation of a healthy society, and I am committed to taking this work forward," Kirti stated, reflecting on her entrepreneurial philosophy.
Building Prerna Canteen: A Rs1.25 Crore Success Story
In August 2025, Kirti launched 'Prerna Canteen' at Jai Prakash Narayan Sarvodaya Vidyalaya in Dariyapur, Hamirpur, starting with ten women partners. The venture began with an initial investment of approximately Rs11 lakh and has since grown into a thriving business with an impressive annual turnover of about Rs1.25 crore.
Currently, eight women are employed at the canteen, with each earning around Rs8,000 per month. The establishment provides nutritious snacks, milk, and meals to 332 children daily at affordable rates, while also serving food for teachers.
Government Support and Future Expansion
Kirti gained valuable initial experience as a bank sakhi before transitioning to entrepreneurship. Her remarkable journey demonstrates the tangible impact of government schemes including self-help groups and the Mukhyamantri Yuva Udyami Yojana.
The official emphasized that such examples illustrate how government programs, when combined with individual determination and effort, are creating meaningful change at the grassroots level.
Looking toward the future, Kirti has applied for a loan under the Mukhyamantri Yuva Udyami Yojana to further expand her business operations and increase her social impact.
