Gujarat and Central Government Forge Partnership to Boost Rural Water and Sanitation
In a significant move to enhance rural infrastructure, the Union government and the Gujarat state government signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on Friday. This agreement, established under the Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0, focuses on making drinking water and sanitation facilities more accessible in rural areas across the state.
Key Officials and Event Details
The signing ceremony was held in Gandhinagar, with Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and other state officials participating in person. Union Jal Shakti Minister C R Paatil joined the event via video conferencing, underscoring the collaborative effort between the central and state governments.
An official statement released after the event quoted Chief Minister Patel, who emphasized the state government's commitment to providing sufficient clean drinking water to all parts of Gujarat, including remote regions. Patel highlighted that the state has been successfully implementing central government schemes on a priority basis and described the MoU as a milestone in rural development.
Objectives and Implementation of the MoU
According to the MoU, the primary goal is to ensure continuous and quality water supply in all rural areas of Gujarat. Efforts will be accelerated to obtain the "Har Ghar Jal" certificate, which signifies that every household has access to safe drinking water. The agreement outlines several key components:
- Completing water supply schemes on time and with high quality standards.
- Handing over completed projects to village panchayats for local management.
- Ensuring proper operation and maintenance of water systems.
- Managing water and sanitation at the village level through village water and sanitation committees.
Roles and Responsibilities
The central government will provide guidance, funding, and monitoring support for the initiatives under the Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0. In contrast, the state government will be responsible for implementation, policy reforms, and technical support. This division of roles aims to streamline efforts and achieve efficient outcomes in rural water and sanitation projects.
The MoU is expected to drive significant improvements in rural infrastructure, contributing to better health and living standards for residents in Gujarat's villages.
