The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast isolated to scattered rain in Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh until June 25, driven by western disturbances. The monsoon, currently delayed by three to four days, is expected to reach the region by the end of June, according to IMD Chandigarh Director Surender Paul.
Rainfall Predictions and Weather Conditions
Day temperatures are likely to rise by 2–3°C in the coming days, but heatwave conditions are not anticipated. Humid conditions will persist, and lightning with gusty winds reaching 40–50 kmph (gusting to 60 kmph) is also predicted during this period.
Paul stated, “Isolated to scattered rain will take place in Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh over the next three to four days till June 25 due to western disturbances. Humid conditions will persist.”
Monsoon Progress and El Niño Impact
The monsoon flow is progressing from east to west across India. Currently stalled over Bihar, conditions are becoming favorable for its further advance. Paul explained, “The monsoons flow is progressing from east to west in India. Presently, it is stalled over Bihar. However, conditions are becoming favourable for its further advance.”
El Niño conditions have set in, which can delay and weaken the monsoon. “El Niño happens when warm water builds up along the coast of South America. This rise in ocean temperature changes the movement of air and clouds across the globe, which can disturb regular wind patterns. For India, this often results in a weak or delayed monsoon season,” Paul added.
Rainfall Deficit in June
From June 1 to June 22, Chandigarh has received 60% less rainfall than normal. The city recorded only 39.3 mm against the long-term average of 97.1 mm. Haryana has seen a 16% deficit, with 27.9 mm against a normal of 33 mm. Punjab has received 27.9 mm against 31.9 mm, marking a 25% shortfall.
