India Approves Major Highway Upgrade with Dedicated Wildlife Crossings in Madhya Pradesh
The Union government has given the green light to a significant highway enhancement project in Madhya Pradesh, designed to curb wildlife fatalities and improve regional connectivity. Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has sanctioned the four-laning of a critical 22-kilometer segment known as a "tiger corridor" on National Highway 46, linking Itarsi and Betul, with an investment of Rs 758 crore.
Project Details and Economic Benefits
In a social media announcement, Gadkari outlined that this initiative will complete the four-laning of the entire corridor, slashing travel times and bolstering connectivity across the area. He emphasized the region's importance as a fertile agricultural zone abundant in natural resources, including coal, copper, graphite, and lead-zinc. The upgraded highway is anticipated to streamline goods transportation and provide farmers with better access to markets and mandis, thereby stimulating local economic growth.
Wildlife Safety Measures
A key feature of this project is the integration of 11 underpasses and overpasses specifically crafted for wildlife. These dedicated crossings aim to allow animals to traverse the highway safely, significantly reducing road accidents in adjacent forested regions. This proactive approach addresses long-standing concerns over animal deaths caused by vehicle collisions, promoting coexistence between infrastructure development and environmental conservation.
Broader Impacts and Future Prospects
Upon completion, the entire Gwalior–Betul corridor will be transformed into a four-lane highway, enhancing road safety in challenging hilly terrain. Additionally, the project is set to boost eco-tourism in prominent protected areas such as Madhav National Park, Ratapani Wildlife Sanctuary, and Satpura Tiger Reserve. By improving accessibility while safeguarding wildlife, this upgrade represents a balanced stride toward sustainable development in central India.
