Jaipur Metro Phase-2 Project Receives Union Cabinet Approval
The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has given its official approval for the ambitious Jaipur Metro Phase-2 project, marking a significant milestone in Rajasthan's urban transportation development. This announcement was made through the Prime Minister's Office website, highlighting the government's commitment to enhancing public infrastructure.
Project Details and Financial Framework
The Jaipur Metro Phase-2 will develop a comprehensive metro corridor spanning 41 kilometers from Prahladpura to Todi Mod. The total budget allocated for this transformative project is INR 13,037.66 crore, reflecting a substantial investment in Rajasthan's future mobility.
Execution of the project will be managed by the Rajasthan Metro Rail Corporation Limited, a joint venture equally shared between the Government of India and the Government of Rajasthan, each holding a 50% stake. This collaborative approach ensures both central and state resources are leveraged effectively.
Network Expansion and Connectivity Enhancements
Phase-2 will introduce a North-South Corridor, complementing the existing East-West Phase-1 network. With 36 stations proposed, the new line will significantly expand Jaipur's metro coverage, integrating key areas through advanced interchange stations and feeder systems.
Major connectivity points include:- Sitapura Industrial Area
- Vishwakarma Industrial Area (VKIA)
- Jaipur Airport (with several underground stations planned)
- Tonk Road
- SMS Hospital and Stadium
- Ambabari
- Vidhyadhar Nagar
Current Metro Operations and Future Projections
Currently, Jaipur Metro operates its Phase-1 network, an 11.64 km East-West line with 11 stations connecting residential and commercial zones to the city's historical center. Despite its limited length, Phase-1 serves approximately 60,000 daily commuters, playing a crucial role in urban transport.
Upon completion of Phase-2, ridership is expected to surge dramatically due to the expanded network coverage, potentially alleviating traffic congestion by encouraging a shift from private vehicles to metro transit. This transition is anticipated to contribute positively to reducing vehicular pollution in the city.
Timeline and Broader Impact
The Jaipur Metro Phase-2 corridor is scheduled for completion by September 2031. Once operational, it will benefit diverse groups including daily commuters, employees, and tourists, fostering seamless connectivity across Jaipur.
By extending along the North-South axis, Phase-2 will work in tandem with the existing East-West corridor, creating an integrated metro network that supports Jaipur's evolution into a modern, future-ready city. This project represents a commendable infrastructure initiative that will not only enhance intra-city connectivity but also contribute to the overall development of Jaipur, Rajasthan, and India at large.
