Jharkhand Agriculture Minister Calls for Urea Supply Strategy Amid West Asia War Tensions
In a significant development, Jharkhand's agriculture minister and Mandar MLA, Shilpi Neha Tirkey, has urgently demanded that the Central government formulate a comprehensive strategy in consultation with states to ensure uninterrupted urea supply. This call comes amid growing concerns over potential fertilizer shortages linked to the ongoing war in West Asia.
Minister Raises Alarm at DISHA Meeting
Speaking at the District Development Coordination and Monitoring Committee (DISHA) meeting in Ranchi, Tirkey expressed serious apprehensions about the impact of West Asia tensions on fertilizer availability. The meeting was chaired by Union Minister of State for Defence and Ranchi MP, Sanjay Seth, providing a high-level platform for the discussion.
"The apprehensions of potential fertilizer shortage in the wake of the tensions in West Asia is expected to hit farmers soon," Tirkey stated emphatically. She highlighted that urea availability often falls short of the quantities requested by state governments from the Centre, describing this discrepancy as a matter of grave concern.
Demand for Immediate Action
The minister insisted on prompt action, declaring, "I demand that the Centre should formulate a solid strategy immediately before the situation goes out of hand." Her statement underscores the urgency felt at the state level regarding agricultural inputs that are critical for farming operations across Jharkhand.
However, the Government of India has previously emphasized that the Centre is closely monitoring the situation and maintains that the country is not currently facing any urea scarcity. This assurance contrasts with the state minister's urgent appeal for proactive measures.
DISHA Platform for Coordination
The DISHA meeting serves as an important coordination mechanism where public representatives and district officials periodically convene to review the implementation of centrally sponsored schemes. This forum enabled Tirkey to directly address her concerns to central authorities, including Minister Sanjay Seth.
Additional Focus on Kisan Credit Card Disbursement
Beyond urea supply, Tirkey also addressed financial support for farmers, advocating for timely disbursement of Kisan Credit Card (KCC) loans. She proposed that banks should regularly organize special camps to ensure farmers receive KCC loans promptly, thereby preventing disruptions to agricultural activities.
"Banks should regularly hold special camps to disburse KCC loans to farmers on time, so that agricultural work is not affected," she emphasized, linking financial accessibility directly to farming productivity.
Broader Implications
The minister's dual focus on urea availability and credit access reflects comprehensive concerns about agricultural sustainability in Jharkhand. With West Asia conflicts potentially disrupting global supply chains, her call for a coordinated strategy between Centre and states highlights the interconnected nature of agricultural security and international geopolitics.
As the debate continues, farmers across the state await concrete measures to safeguard their input supplies and financial resources during this period of uncertainty.
