Karnataka Mandates Farmer ID for Fertilizer Purchase

Karnataka Enforces Mandatory Farmer ID for Fertilizer Procurement

In a significant move to regulate agricultural inputs, the Karnataka government has mandated the use of Farmer ID (FID) for purchasing fertilizers, particularly urea. This announcement was made by Chandrashekar, the joint director of agriculture for Kodagu district, during a press briefing in Madikeri.

Phased Distribution and Import Challenges

Chandrashekar revealed that fertilizers will be distributed in a phased manner, strictly based on the allotments provided by the Union government to the state. He emphasized that this structured approach is crucial due to potential disruptions in importing fertilizer raw materials, exacerbated by the ongoing conflict in West Asia. "The war in West Asia could lead to supply chain issues, making it imperative to manage resources efficiently," he stated.

Farmer ID: A Tool to Combat Black Market

The enforcement of FID is not entirely new; it was previously required for availing agricultural benefits, credit facilities, and government exemptions. However, its implementation was lax until now. Chandrashekar explained that making FID mandatory, especially for urea purchases, aims to prevent the diversion of fertilizers to the black market. Urea is often misused in industries such as leather and sugar, leading to illegal sales and price manipulation.

To strengthen this initiative, the state's agriculture department has issued strict instructions regarding FID compliance. Additionally, fertilizers will be distributed through K-Kisan technology, a digital platform designed to enhance transparency and curb illicit trade practices.

Steps for Farmers to Comply

Farmers are urged to take immediate action to ensure uninterrupted access to fertilizers. Chandrashekar outlined the following steps:

  • Visit the nearest farmer-contact centre or horticulture department with essential documents, including Aadhaar.
  • If you already have an FID, link all your survey numbers to it to streamline records.
  • If you do not have an FID, create a new one promptly to avoid delays in procurement.

Strict Penalties for Violations

In a stern warning to sellers, Chandrashekar highlighted that any sale of agricultural inputs at prices exceeding the maximum selling price will result in severe consequences. "Licenses will be suspended or cancelled for those found violating pricing regulations," he declared, underscoring the government's commitment to fair trade practices.

This policy shift reflects Karnataka's proactive stance in addressing both domestic and international challenges in agriculture, ensuring that resources reach genuine farmers while safeguarding against market abuses.
