Telangana's Mahalakshmi Scheme Achieves Rs 10,000 Crore Savings for Women
In a landmark development, the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) has revealed that women across the state have collectively saved an impressive Rs 10,000 crore in travel expenses under the Mahalakshmi free bus travel scheme. This initiative, launched on December 9, 2023, has facilitated over 290 crore zero-fare journeys by women within just 28 months, marking a significant stride in public welfare and gender inclusivity.
Massive Uptake and Financial Relief
According to TGSRTC managing director Y Nagi Reddy, the scale of utilisation underscores both the necessity and widespread acceptance of the Mahalakshmi scheme. He highlighted that women who previously allocated between Rs 1,500 and Rs 2,500 per month for transportation are now redirecting these funds towards savings and essential household needs. This financial relief has empowered countless families, enhancing economic stability and personal security.
The scheme has also led to a dramatic surge in female ridership. Prior to its implementation, women constituted around 40% of public transport users, but this figure has now skyrocketed to over 67%. On an average day, more than 35 lakh women are utilizing public transport, reflecting a profound shift in mobility patterns and accessibility.
Government Commitment and Empowerment Goals
Transport minister Ponnam Prabhakar emphasized the government's dedication to this initiative, noting that the Mahalakshmi scheme was rolled out within 48 hours of the administration assuming office, highlighting its priority status. He explained that the programme is a cornerstone of women's empowerment, enabling greater access to employment opportunities, educational institutions, and healthcare services. By removing financial barriers to transportation, the scheme fosters social and economic advancement for women across Telangana.
Future Enhancements and Infrastructure Expansion
Looking ahead, TGSRTC is set to introduce chip-based smart cards for women beneficiaries. This innovative system aims to streamline access to free travel, eliminate the need for Aadhaar verification during journeys, and generate precise usage data for better planning and resource allocation. Additionally, in response to the increased demand spurred by the scheme, the corporation is actively expanding its fleet by adding new buses. This expansion ensures that the growing number of women relying on public transport can continue to benefit from efficient and reliable services.
The Mahalakshmi scheme stands as a testament to Telangana's commitment to gender equality and social welfare, with its tangible impacts resonating through savings, enhanced mobility, and broader empowerment for women statewide.
