Maharashtra CM: Gare Palma Coal to Reduce Electricity Costs

Maharashtra CM Fadnavis Announces Power Tariff Reduction Through High-Quality Coal Supply

In a significant development for Maharashtra's energy sector, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis declared on Sunday that the supply of premium-grade coal from the Gare Palma Sector-II mine in Chhattisgarh will play a pivotal role in reducing electricity tariffs while fortifying the state's long-term energy security framework.

Superior Coal Quality to Drive Efficiency and Cost Savings

Fadnavis elaborated that the availability of high-calorific coal, with a gross calorific value of approximately 4,300, will substantially enhance power generation efficiency and curtail overall fuel expenditures. "Currently, we are utilizing coal with a gross calorific value of around 2,800. With the introduction of Gare Palma coal, a lesser quantity will be required to produce the same electricity output, leading to considerable cost reductions," he explained. The Chief Minister emphasized that these financial savings will be directly passed on to consumers through lower power bills.

Environmental Benefits and Enhanced Generation Capacity

Beyond economic advantages, Fadnavis highlighted that the superior coal quality will not only boost generation capacity but also minimize environmental impact due to more efficient combustion processes. "This initiative presents a compelling value proposition — reduced costs, heightened efficiency, and environmental benefits," he stated, underscoring the multifaceted gains from the project.

Historic Allocation and Operational Milestone

The Chief Minister noted that the Gare Palma coal mine was allocated to Mahagenco as part of a landmark decision by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to provide captive coal blocks to state-operated power companies. Despite encountering numerous challenges, including environmental clearances and land acquisition obstacles, the project has now become operational after nearly eight years of persistent efforts.

Long-Term Energy Security and Future Initiatives

Fadnavis pointed out that the mine, with an estimated operational lifespan of 77 years, will guarantee a consistent and dependable coal supply, thereby diminishing Maharashtra's reliance on external sources. "This marks a significant stride towards achieving fuel self-reliance," he affirmed. Additionally, the Chief Minister revealed that Maharashtra is advancing three major coal gasification projects, which could unlock new pathways for cleaner and more efficient coal utilization in the coming years.
