Maharashtra Government Grants Final Extension for Women's Scheme e-KYC
In a significant relief for thousands of women across Maharashtra, the state government has announced a crucial extension for completing mandatory e-KYC verification under the Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana. Women and Child Development Minister Aditi Tatkare confirmed via social media platform X that the deadline, originally set for March 31, has now been pushed to April 30, 2024.
Reasons Behind the Deadline Extension
Minister Tatkare explained that this decision was made following unseasonal rains and hailstorms that disrupted normal activities across the state, coupled with repeated requests from beneficiaries facing difficulties. The extension was formally approved on the recommendation of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Sunetra Pawar.
This marks the third extension for the e-KYC process, with previous deadlines in September and December 2023 also being extended. Despite these efforts, many beneficiaries have continued to encounter persistent technical and documentation challenges while updating their Aadhaar and bank-linked details.
Final Opportunity for Beneficiaries
State officials have emphasized that the April 30 deadline represents the final opportunity for eligible women to complete necessary corrections. Failure to do so will result in disruption of monthly benefit payments. The scheme, launched in July 2024, provides ₹1,500 per month to qualified women across Maharashtra.
Many beneficiaries have expressed frustration with the verification process. One woman told TOI: "We have tried several times but are unable to complete the e-KYC. We have no one to contact or approach. Why should the government start a scheme and weed out genuine beneficiaries without providing an easy way to complete it?" She suggested appointing district-wise officials to assist genuine applicants.
Digital Audit and Beneficiary Verification
The extension comes amid a comprehensive audit of the scheme's beneficiary list. The state economic survey noted a reduction in beneficiary numbers following this audit, which utilized a sophisticated digital system dubbed the 'digital dragnet'. This system cross-referenced applicant details with tax and vehicle registration records to identify ineligible recipients.
The audit successfully removed thousands of ghost beneficiaries and also excluded numerous men who had incorrectly registered. For those removed from the list, the original March 31 deadline remained in effect to prove eligibility through proper documentation.
Government's Urgent Appeal
The Mahayuti government has issued an urgent appeal to all beneficiaries to complete their e-KYC verification before the new April 30 deadline. This step is crucial to ensure uninterrupted receipt of the monthly financial assistance. The scheme represents a significant social welfare initiative aimed at supporting women across Maharashtra, and officials stress that timely verification is essential for its continued success.
As the final extension period begins, district administrations are expected to ramp up awareness campaigns and provide necessary support to help women navigate the e-KYC process smoothly.
