Mandya Agricultural University to Empower Youth and Strengthen Farming Sector
Agricultural University in Mandya district is set to empower youth and significantly strengthen the agricultural sector, according to Agriculture Minister N Cheluvarayaswamy. He made this announcement during a felicitation programme honouring MP Basavaraj Bommai for his contributions to regional water management initiatives.
Recognition for Water Management Efforts
The event was organised to recognise Bommai's pivotal role in facilitating the filling of lakes and ponds from the Lokapavani River. This initiative has benefited multiple villages under the Tubinakere Gram Panchayat, including Elechakanahalli, Yeliyur, Uramara Kasalagere, Ragimuddanahalli, Jakkanahalli, and Alugudu. Minister Cheluvarayaswamy highlighted that this project has significantly improved water availability for both agriculture and livestock in the region, addressing critical needs of local farming communities.
University's Role in Modernising Agriculture
Emphasising the importance of the new Agricultural University, Cheluvarayaswamy stated that it will provide young farmers with access to modern agricultural knowledge, robust research support, and comprehensive technical training. This educational initiative aims to enhance productivity and ensure greater financial stability for farmers across Mandya district. The minister underscored that such advancements are crucial for sustaining the agricultural heritage of the area.
Addressing Irrigation Challenges
Despite Mandya's reputation for fertile land and a rich agricultural legacy, the minister pointed out that only approximately 55% of the district's land is currently irrigated. He assured that the government remains committed to expanding irrigation facilities and ensuring water reaches all parts of the district through continued efforts to fill lakes and local waterbodies. Cheluvarayaswamy also credited Bommai for initiating the Elechakanahalli lift irrigation project, which has brought vital water resources to numerous farming communities.
Community and Leadership Perspectives
MP Basavaraj Bommai expressed satisfaction with the successful implementation of the irrigation initiatives, emphasising that a public representative's foremost responsibility is to respond to people's concerns and actively work towards regional development. Spiritual leaders, including Shivarathri Deshikendra Swami of Suttur Mutt and Nishchalanandanatha Swami of Vishwa Vokkaliga Mahasamsthana Mutt in Bengaluru, highlighted the critical importance of water security in preventing rural migration and encouraging youth to pursue agriculture as a viable career path.
The event was attended by notable figures such as Srirangapatna MLA Ramesh Bandisiddegowda, former Deputy Chief Minister CN Ashwath Narayan, and writer Jayaprakash Gowda, reflecting broad community support for these developmental efforts.
