Union Cabinet Greenlights Major Metro Extension in Gujarat
The Union cabinet, in a significant move to enhance urban connectivity, has approved a 3.33-kilometer extension of the North-South corridor of the Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation Limited (GMRC). This extension will link GIFT City to Shahpur in Gandhinagar, with an estimated project cost of Rs 1,067.35 crore. The decision was made during a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi, underscoring the government's commitment to infrastructure development.
Project Details and Timeline
The metro extension is slated for completion within four years and will feature three elevated stations along the route. This strategic addition aims to improve transportation efficiency in the region, catering to the growing needs of commuters and businesses alike.
Expected Passenger Traffic and Benefits
According to an official statement, the extended corridor is projected to serve approximately 23,702 passengers daily by 2029, with this number expected to rise to over 58,000 passengers by 2041. The route is designed to benefit:
- Major multinational companies operating in the area
- Educational institutions seeking better accessibility
- Commercial hubs that rely on efficient transport networks
This initiative is poised to ease daily travel for commuters heading to GIFT City for business, employment, and educational purposes, thereby reducing congestion and travel time.
Employment Opportunities and Economic Impact
The project is anticipated to generate around 1,000 jobs during the construction phase, providing a boost to the local economy. After completion, it will offer employment to about 250 people in operations and maintenance roles. Additionally, officials highlight that the initiative will create indirect job opportunities through allied activities, further stimulating economic growth in Gujarat.
Implementation and Background
GMRC, a 50:50 joint venture between the Central government and the Gujarat state government, will be responsible for implementing this project. Currently, Phase I of the Ahmedabad Metro spans 68.28 kilometers, covering key stretches such as the APMC to Motera Stadium on the North-South corridor and Thaltej Gam to Vastral Gam on the East-West corridor. This new extension builds on existing infrastructure to create a more comprehensive metro network in the region.
