Ongole District Proposes Major Bridge Project to Transform Coastal Connectivity
The district administration of Ongole has put forward an ambitious proposal to construct a high-level bridge across the Buckingham Canal near Gundayapalem in Ongole rural mandal. This strategic infrastructure project, estimated at ₹22 crore, aims to significantly enhance connectivity while simultaneously promoting coastal tourism in the region.
Dual-Purpose Infrastructure for Safety and Economic Growth
The proposed bridge is designed to serve two critical functions that have long been needed in the area. First, it will dramatically improve access to the picturesque Kothapatnam coast, which has remained largely underexplored despite its natural beauty. Second, and perhaps more importantly, the structure will provide a vital lifeline for fishing communities during adverse weather conditions and natural calamities.
Currently, fishermen and local residents face substantial challenges when attempting to cross the canal, particularly during flood events and cyclonic conditions when movement becomes hazardous and frequently disrupted. The absence of a permanent elevated structure has been a persistent concern for years, with temporary arrangements consistently proving inadequate during emergency situations.
Addressing Longstanding Connectivity Challenges
District officials emphasize that the bridge would ensure uninterrupted connectivity between coastal habitations and the mainland. This improved access would enable fishermen to safely transport their daily catch to markets even during difficult weather patterns. Furthermore, the infrastructure would facilitate quicker evacuation procedures and more efficient relief operations during disasters, thereby strengthening overall disaster preparedness throughout the region.
Beyond its functional importance for safety and commerce, the bridge is viewed as a potential catalyst for tourism development. With enhanced road access, authorities anticipate increased tourist footfall to Gundayapalem and the surrounding coastal belt. This influx could open numerous livelihood opportunities through small businesses, food stalls, and various eco-tourism activities that would benefit local communities economically.

The proposal has garnered significant political backing from local representatives. Ongole MP Magunta Srinivasula Reddy has endorsed the project, describing it as a "game changer" that will enhance both safety measures and economic growth in the region. Santhanuthalapadu MLA B N Vijay Kumar has echoed this sentiment, noting that the bridge addresses a long-pending demand from local residents who have endured hardships due to poor connectivity for many years.
The district administration has submitted the project for approval under National Disaster Response Fund support and hopes to secure necessary approvals promptly. If realized, construction is expected to transform the region into a safer, better-connected, and more attractive coastal destination that balances practical needs with tourism potential.
