The effective execution and diligent monitoring of government welfare programs by the Hazaribag district administration are bringing about a significant transformation in rural lives. A shining example of this change is Umesh Bhuiyan, a 40-year-old resident of Kanddag village in the Padma block, who has achieved remarkable financial independence through commercial pig farming.
From Daily Wage Struggles to Swine Success
For years, Umesh Bhuiyan worked as a daily-wage labourer, grappling with the constant challenge of managing household expenses and funding his children's education on a meagre income. His monthly earnings, which fluctuated between Rs 5,000 and Rs 7,000, offered little stability or hope for a better future. This cycle of hardship was broken in 2022 when his life took a decisive turn.
Bhuiyan was selected as a beneficiary under the state-sponsored Mukhyamantri Pashudhan Vikas Yojana, a piggery development initiative implemented by the animal husbandry, dairy, and fisheries department with robust support from the district administration. This marked the beginning of his journey toward self-sufficiency.
Comprehensive Support Fuels Entrepreneurial Growth
The scheme provided Bhuiyan with a complete package designed for success. He received four female pigs and one male pig at a 50% subsidy. The support didn't stop there; it extended to essential inputs like pig feed, a three-year insurance cover, and vital scientific training. Furthermore, he benefited from regular veterinary supervision, timely vaccinations, and access to necessary medicines.
With consistent technical guidance from department officials and continuous monitoring by the administration, Bhuiyan skillfully adopted pig farming as a viable commercial venture. His dedication, coupled with structured support, yielded extraordinary results. From the initial stock, his enterprise has grown exponentially. He now owns around 80 pigs and sells nearly 350 to 400 piglets every year.
A Model of Rural Transformation
The financial impact on Bhuiyan's life has been profound. His annual income has skyrocketed to an impressive range between Rs 3 lakh and Rs 5 lakh, a stark contrast to his earlier struggles. District Animal Husbandry Officer Sanjay Kumar noted that Bhuiyan was part of a batch where approximately 16 individuals were trained, highlighting the scheme's broader reach.
Commenting on the administration's approach, Deputy Commissioner Shashi Prakash Singh emphasized that transparent implementation of welfare schemes, coupled with timely training and technical support, is crucial to maximizing benefits for rural beneficiaries. "Bhuiyan's success reflects the potential of Mukhyamantri Pashudhan Vikas Yojana to enhance income and promote self-reliance in rural areas," he added.
