Punjab Government Expands Healthcare with 109 New Aam Aadmi Clinics
In a significant boost to public health infrastructure, the Bhagwant Mann-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government inaugurated 109 new Aam Aadmi Clinics (AACs) in Fatehgarh Sahib on Saturday. This addition elevates the total number of such clinics across Punjab to an impressive 990, marking a major milestone in the state's healthcare delivery system.
Free Healthcare Services and Massive Outreach
AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal, addressing a gathering in Fatehgarh Sahib, emphasized that these clinics provide 107 essential medicines and 47 diagnostic tests completely free of cost. He revealed that the clinics have already recorded a staggering five crore outpatient department (OPD) visits, underscoring their widespread utilization and impact. Kejriwal noted that with Punjab's population of approximately three crore, this high number of visits indicates repeat usage, particularly by patients managing chronic conditions like diabetes and hypertension who rely on monthly supplies.
Future Expansion and Health Insurance Scheme
The government announced plans to open 400 more Aam Aadmi Clinics in the coming days, which would bring the total to around 1,500 facilities statewide. Additionally, Kejriwal detailed the progress of the Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana, a health card initiative aimed at covering 65 lakh families. So far, 30 lakh beneficiary families have been enrolled, and 1.65 lakh individuals have availed treatment under this scheme, which also includes access to premium private hospitals like Fortis in Mohali for serious ailments such as cancer or heart attacks.
Chief Minister Highlights Broader Governance Achievements
Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann used the occasion to showcase his administration's accomplishments beyond healthcare. He highlighted improvements in agriculture, noting that farmers now receive 7 to 8 hours of continuous daytime electricity, a substantial upgrade from previous erratic supply. Furthermore, canal water access has expanded dramatically, reaching 78% of farmers compared to just 22% earlier, thanks to initiatives like restoring 6,900 km of watercourses and 18,349 channels.
Mann also pointed to welfare measures such as providing free electricity to 90% of households, generating over 65,000 corruption-free jobs for youth, and implementing the Maavan Dhian Satkar Yojna, which offers monthly financial assistance of Rs 1,000 to women above 18 years and Rs 1,500 to women from Scheduled Caste communities. Infrastructure enhancements include closing 19 toll plazas, saving Rs 64 lakh daily, and launching irrigation projects in Fatehgarh Sahib worth Rs 41.22 crore to benefit 41,726 acres across 70 villages.
Political Critique and Electoral Caution
Kejriwal contrasted Punjab's healthcare model with that of Delhi and issued a stark warning to voters, asserting that a change in government could lead to the rollback of key welfare schemes like free electricity and healthcare. He urged citizens to support the AAP to preserve these benefits. Meanwhile, CM Mann launched a scathing attack on opposition parties, particularly targeting the Akali Dal and its leaders. He accused them of neglecting public welfare, promoting drug abuse, and misusing religious institutions for personal gain, while emphasizing his government's focus on development and transparency.
The event underscored the AAP government's commitment to enhancing public services and healthcare accessibility in Punjab, with both Kejriwal and Mann rallying support ahead of upcoming electoral challenges.
