Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann Unveils 'Meri Rasoi Yojna' for Enhanced Food Security
In a significant move aimed at bolstering food and nutrition security across Punjab, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announced the launch of the 'Meri Rasoi Yojna' on Monday. This initiative, set to commence in April, will provide free quarterly food kits to approximately 40 lakh families in the state, marking a strategic step ahead of the 2027 assembly elections.
Details of the Free Food Kit Distribution
Under the 'Meri Rasoi Yojna', eligible beneficiaries who hold National Food Security Act (NFSA) cards will receive these kits every quarter, starting from April. Each kit is designed to supplement the wheat already distributed under the NFSA and includes essential items for monthly consumption:
- 2 kg of lentils
- 2 kg of sugar
- 1 kg of salt
- 200 grams of turmeric powder
- 1 litre of mustard oil
The distribution will be managed by the food and civil supplies department, with Markfed serving as the nodal agency to ensure efficient implementation.
Government's Commitment to Nutrition and Quality Assurance
Chief Minister Mann emphasized that this scheme is driven by a moral responsibility to address nutritional deficiencies, particularly among children from economically weaker sections. "Reports from schools have indicated that children from economically weak families don't get proper nutrition," he stated, highlighting the urgency of the initiative.
To maintain high standards, the Punjab government has pledged strict quality checks on all supplied items. Mann assured, "The Punjab govt will ensure strict quality checks on all items supplied. Any complaint regarding poor quality or irregular supply will be dealt with strictly." This commitment underscores the administration's focus on delivering reliable and nutritious support to households.
Budget Allocation and Broader Context
Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema revealed that a budget allocation of Rs 950 crore has been earmarked for the 'Meri Rasoi Yojna'. This figure was calculated based on a detailed assessment of the 40 lakh beneficiaries and current market prices of the commodities involved.
Reflecting on Punjab's historical role in national food production, Mann noted the irony that while the state feeds millions across the country, many local families struggle with inadequate meals. He asserted, "This guarantee was not written and was not part of our party's manifesto, but it is our moral responsibility towards the people of Punjab, and we are fulfilling it."
Additional Updates from the Announcement
During the media briefing, Chief Minister Mann also addressed other pressing issues:
- Gurdaspur Killings Investigation: Mann confirmed that investigations are ongoing into the deaths of Assistant Sub-Inspector Gurnam Singh and home guard Ashok Kumar, who were found dead near the Pakistan border in Gurdaspur on Sunday.
- Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of Voters' List: Responding to queries about the SIR in Punjab, Mann expressed willingness to cooperate with the Election Commission of India but cautioned against potential tampering. "We will not let them tamper with votes, make fake votes or delete genuine ones, as has been reported in states ruled by them," he stated, urging the commission to address related concerns.
The 'Meri Rasoi Yojna' represents a proactive effort by the Punjab government to enhance household nutrition and food security, aligning with broader welfare objectives as the state prepares for future electoral challenges.
