Punjab Announces Horticulture Learning Center After Netherlands Study Tour
In a significant move toward agricultural transformation, Punjab is planning to establish a dedicated Horticulture Experience and Learning Center modeled after the World Horti Center in the Netherlands. This initiative follows Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann's recent visit to Dutch horticulture institutions where he studied advanced farming practices.
Chief Minister's Netherlands Visit Yields Key Insights
During his official visit on Monday, Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann toured leading horticulture facilities including the World Horti Center in Westland and Keukenhof in Lisse. The delegation focused on examining best practices in sustainable agriculture, floriculture, and high-efficiency farming systems that could be adapted for Punjab's agricultural landscape.
"This was a unique experience that introduced us to the Netherlands' integrated ecosystem of greenhouse and controlled-environment agriculture," Mann stated. "Their approach has transformed farming into a high-productivity, sustainable sector through the strategic combination of technology, research, and supportive policies."
Proposed Center to Drive Innovation and Collaboration
Officials revealed that the proposed Horticulture Experience and Learning Center will serve as a collaborative hub bringing together researchers, academic institutions, industry stakeholders, and government agencies. The center's primary objectives include driving agricultural innovation, developing specialized skills among farmers, and promoting the adoption of sustainable farming practices across Punjab.
The Chief Minister emphasized that key learnings from the Netherlands visit included advanced greenhouse and indoor farming systems that significantly improve crop yields while reducing water consumption and pesticide dependence. "These technologies can help Punjab push crop diversification and move farmers away from water-intensive crops," Mann explained, highlighting the potential for enhanced farmer incomes through these methods.
Technology and Sustainability at the Core
Mann specifically highlighted the critical role of modern technologies in building climate-resilient agriculture. These include automation systems, robotics applications, artificial intelligence solutions, precision irrigation techniques, and advanced water management practices such as rainwater harvesting and water reuse systems.
During discussions with Dutch counterparts, both sides explored potential collaboration in knowledge transfer and technology partnerships. The Chief Minister also showcased Punjab's Industrial and Business Development Policy (IBDP) 2026, positioning the state as an innovation-driven hub for sustainable agriculture and global partnerships.
Floriculture and Agri-Tourism Opportunities
At the renowned Keukenhof gardens, the delegation studied a remarkable model where approximately 7 million flower bulbs are planted annually across 32 hectares, blooming within a precisely managed seasonal window. Mann noted that this visit provided valuable insights for developing floriculture clusters, strengthening agricultural exports, and promoting agri-tourism opportunities within Punjab.
The proposed Horticulture Experience and Learning Center represents a strategic step toward modernizing Punjab's agricultural sector while addressing critical challenges related to water conservation, crop diversification, and sustainable farming practices. By adopting international best practices and fostering innovation, Punjab aims to transform its agricultural landscape for improved productivity and environmental sustainability.
