The Punjab government has given its approval for the modernization of bus terminals in five key cities. This significant move aims to strengthen the state's public transport infrastructure through a structured Public Private Partnership model.
Focus on Major Transport Hubs
Transport Minister Laljit Singh Bhullar announced the decision on Saturday. He emphasized that the modernization will cover bus terminals in Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Sangrur, Patiala, and Bathinda. These terminals serve as crucial connectivity points for both rural and urban populations across Punjab.
Leadership and Objectives
Bhullar stated that the decision was taken under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann. The primary objective is to improve passenger facilities, safety standards, accessibility features, and overall operational efficiency at these major transport hubs.
The minister highlighted the important role these terminals play in inter-state travel. They connect Punjab with neighboring states including Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Haryana, Delhi, and Rajasthan.
Passenger Traffic Statistics
According to official figures, Ludhiana and Jalandhar bus terminals handle substantial daily passenger traffic. These facilities see between 75,000 and one lakh passengers every single day.
Patiala and Bathinda terminals also experience significant usage. They witness footfall of approximately 50,000 passengers daily, demonstrating the critical need for modernization.
Implementation Models
The projects will be implemented using specific partnership models. These include Design-Build-Finance-Operate-Transfer or Build-Operate-Transfer frameworks. Bhullar explained that these models will ensure quality services while maintaining fiscal prudence for the state government.
Modernization Features
The modernization initiative will focus on several key areas of improvement:
- Enhanced waiting areas with better seating arrangements
- Improved sanitation facilities and cleanliness standards
- Upgraded lighting systems for better visibility and security
