Punjab Government Unveils Major Solar Streetlight Initiative for Rural Areas
In a significant move towards rural electrification and sustainable development, the Punjab government has announced the launch of the 'Mukhya Mantri Roshan Punjab Yojna'. This ambitious scheme aims to illuminate every village across the state with solar-powered LED streetlights, backed by a substantial investment of Rs 550 crore.
Minister Announces Details at Jalandhar Press Conference
Punjab's New and Renewable Energy Minister, Aman Arora, revealed comprehensive details about the project during a press conference held at the Circuit House in Jalandhar on Sunday. He described this initiative as one of the largest rural lighting programs ever undertaken in the region.
The state Cabinet, under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, granted formal approval to the scheme on Saturday. The primary objective is to provide reliable and cost-effective lighting solutions to all villages, addressing long-standing infrastructure gaps.
Massive Scale and Implementation Timeline
Under this groundbreaking project, more than three lakh solar LED lights will be installed throughout Punjab. Minister Arora emphasized that solar streetlights were chosen specifically for their zero electricity costs, high reliability, and suitability for rural environments.
The implementation will be managed by the Punjab Energy Development Agency (PEDA), with installation scheduled to occur in a phased manner between June and October 2026. This structured approach ensures systematic coverage across the entire state.
Revised Funding Pattern and Maintenance Provisions
The scheme introduces a revised funding model where the state government will contribute 70% of the costs, while gram panchayats will cover the remaining 30%. This collaborative financial structure aims to ensure sustainable implementation and local ownership.
Minister Arora highlighted that over the past seven decades, approximately 1.14 lakh streetlights were installed in villages, many of which have become non-functional. The new scheme addresses this maintenance challenge by including a comprehensive seven-year annual maintenance contract for all installations.
Advanced Monitoring and Complaint Resolution Systems
Each solar streetlight will feature geo-tagging technology for precise location tracking. A centralized command and control centre will enable real-time monitoring of all installations across Punjab.
The system will also incorporate an IVR helpline specifically for lodging complaints about malfunctioning lights. Service guarantees ensure that any defective unit will be replaced within three days of reporting, significantly improving response times compared to previous systems.
Broader Impacts on Rural Development
Minister Arora emphasized that this initiative will enhance safety conditions, particularly for women, while promoting greater inclusivity in rural communities. The improved lighting infrastructure is expected to raise living standards and create more vibrant village environments after dark.
Terming the scheme a game-changer for rural Punjab, the minister explained that beyond security improvements, the project will strengthen economic activities in villages by enabling extended business hours and improved mobility during evening hours.
Part of Larger Renewable Energy Strategy
The Mukhya Mantri Roshan Punjab Yojna represents just one component of the state government's broader commitment to renewable energy. Minister Arora confirmed that the Punjab administration is actively working on multiple solar projects designed to boost green energy production throughout the state.
This comprehensive approach positions Punjab as a leader in sustainable rural development, combining immediate infrastructure improvements with long-term environmental benefits through clean energy adoption.
