Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw conducted a high-level review of the Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) recruitment process on Thursday, emphasizing greater transparency, accuracy, accountability, and the adoption of technology to accelerate hiring across Indian Railways.
During the review meeting with senior railway officials, the minister highlighted the need for a recruitment framework that is efficient, merit-based, and candidate-friendly. He also reiterated the importance of leveraging digital tools, including Computer-Based Tests (CBTs) and tablet-based examinations, to streamline recruitment procedures.
Railways Recruits Over 43,000 Candidates in FY 2025-26
Indian Railways has significantly accelerated its recruitment drive, appointing 43,781 candidates during FY 2025-26 through completed recruitment cycles covering 47,084 vacancies across six major categories.
Recruitment Performance in FY 2025-26
- Assistant Loco Pilots (ALPs): 18,799 vacancies notified, 17,193 recruited
- Technicians: 14,298 vacancies notified, 13,416 recruited
- Sub-Inspectors (RPF): 452 vacancies notified, 450 recruited
- Constables (RPF): 4,208 vacancies notified, 4,205 recruited
- Junior Engineers (JE)/DMS/CMA: 7,951 vacancies notified, 7,333 recruited
- Paramedical Staff: 1,376 vacancies notified, 1,184 recruited
Total: 47,084 vacancies notified, 43,781 recruited. The figures reflect Indian Railways’ continued focus on strengthening its workforce while ensuring timely completion of recruitment cycles.
Technology at the Core of Recruitment Reforms
Vaishnaw noted that all departmental examinations are now being conducted through the Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode. He directed officials to expand the use of tablet-based examinations wherever feasible to improve speed, operational efficiency, and candidate experience. According to the minister, technology-driven recruitment systems will help minimize delays, enhance transparency, and improve accuracy in evaluating candidates.
Massive Multi-Language Examination Exercise
The Railway Recruitment Boards conduct one of the largest recruitment exercises in the country. Examinations are held across multiple cities and centers and are conducted in as many as 15 languages, ensuring accessibility for candidates from diverse linguistic backgrounds. The large-scale recruitment process involves multiple examination shifts and extensive technological coordination to maintain fairness, standardization, and transparency.

Several major recruitment examinations have already been conducted, with document verification and final empanelment processes currently underway.

- NTPC Graduate Level (CEN 05/2024): 8,113 vacancies
- NTPC Undergraduate Level (CEN 06/2024): 3,445 vacancies
- Ministerial & Isolated Categories (CEN 07/2024): 1,036 vacancies
- Technicians (CEN 02/2025): 6,238 vacancies
- Paramedical Categories (CEN 03/2025): 434 vacancies
Railway officials stated that document verification has commenced for several categories, while final results for remaining categories are expected shortly.
Over 55,000 Vacancies Moving Towards Final Selection
The minister also reviewed examinations where final recruitment is expected within the next six months to one year.

- Assistant Loco Pilots (ALPs): 10,970 vacancies
- Section Controllers: 368 vacancies
- Junior Engineers (JE)/DMS/CMA: 2,585 vacancies
- NTPC Graduate Level: 5,810 vacancies
- NTPC Undergraduate Level: 3,058 vacancies
Total: 55,229 vacancies. These recruitment drives are expected to further strengthen the railway workforce and support operational expansion across the national transporter.
Annual Recruitment Calendar Wins Candidate Approval
Vaishnaw observed that the annual recruitment calendar and the system of quarterly vacancy notifications have been positively received by job aspirants. The structured approach has provided greater predictability, enabling candidates to plan their preparation and examination schedules more effectively. He stressed that recruitment systems must continuously evolve through technology adoption, faster processing, and stronger accountability mechanisms.
Focus on Better Communication and Misinformation Control
The Railway Minister also instructed Railway Recruitment Boards to strengthen communication channels with candidates and stakeholders. He emphasized the need to promptly counter misinformation and ensure that accurate updates reach aspirants in a timely manner. According to officials, transparent communication will help maintain public confidence and improve candidate experience throughout the recruitment cycle.

Reaffirming Indian Railways’ commitment to fair and transparent recruitment, Vaishnaw said the organization will continue implementing reforms supported by technology, structured planning, and robust examination processes. With thousands of vacancies under various stages of recruitment and a growing reliance on digital examination systems, Indian Railways aims to build a modern, efficient, and inclusive recruitment ecosystem for young aspirants across the country.
