Ranchi's 100 MW Floating Solar Plant Nears Completion, Promises Zero Power Cuts

Union Minister of State for Defence and Ranchi MP Sanjay Seth announced on Tuesday that the ambitious 100 MW floating solar power plant at Getalsud dam on the city outskirts is nearing completion. This landmark project represents a significant step forward in renewable energy infrastructure for the region.

Project Details and Timeline

Built at a substantial cost of Rs 500 crore and spread across 172 acres, the plant is expected to be inaugurated by April. Once operational, it will supply uninterrupted power to nearly 1 lakh households in Ranchi, potentially eliminating power cuts for these residents.

The project, developed by Solar Energy Corporation of India Ltd, marks the first floating solar initiative in the state. It is designed to generate electricity daily from approximately 7 am to 6 pm, significantly enhancing power reliability throughout the city.

Infrastructure and Progress

The supporting infrastructure for this project has also been completed, including the 132 kV double-circuit Getalsud-Hesagadh transmission line. This ensures seamless integration with the existing power grid, facilitating efficient distribution of the generated electricity.

The first phase of 50 MW power generation is expected to be commissioned shortly, marking a crucial milestone in the project's implementation timeline.

Ministerial Review and Support

Sanjay Seth recently met with Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi in New Delhi to review the project's progress and advocate for its early inauguration. Following their meeting, Seth expressed optimism about the project's impact on social media.

"With its commissioning, the dream of zero power cuts for nearly one lakh households in Ranchi will be realised," Seth wrote on X. "I have requested the minister to inaugurate the project, and he has kindly agreed."

Seth also highlighted the project's origins, noting that he had proposed it to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy in December 2021, with approval granted within three months. He expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for supporting this important renewable energy initiative.

Environmental and Technological Benefits

The minister emphasized several advantages of floating solar technology that make this project particularly significant:

  • Efficient utilization of water bodies without competing for valuable land resources
  • Reduction of evaporation losses from the dam's water surface
  • No adverse impact on the dam's storage capacity or aquatic ecosystem
  • Land conservation by utilizing existing water infrastructure

This innovative approach to solar power generation demonstrates how renewable energy projects can be implemented in ways that minimize environmental impact while maximizing efficiency and community benefit.
