Major Infrastructure Boost for Aska with Rs 290 Crore Road Projects
Berhampur: Aska, a key town in Ganjam district, is poised for a significant infrastructure upgrade as the central government has sanctioned three major road projects with an estimated total cost of approximately Rs 290 crore. This move aims to enhance connectivity and address long-standing issues in the region.
Details of the Sanctioned Projects
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has approved a bypass road that will connect National Highways (NH)-157 and 59, with an estimated cost of Rs 159.5 crore. Additionally, high-level bridges will be constructed over the rivers Rushikulya and Badanadi, which flow on either side of Aska, as well as over the Tipisara nullah that runs through the town, with an estimated cost of Rs 126.5 crore.
The works department of the state government granted administrative approval for the bridge projects on Wednesday, according to sources. This step paves the way for the commencement of construction activities.
Feasibility Study for Four-Lane Green Road
In a further development, the central government has allocated Rs 66.35 lakh for the preparation of a feasibility and detailed project report (DPR) for a four-lane green road from Berhampur to Aska. The estimated cost of this 33-km-long road will be determined only after the DPR is completed, as stated by an engineer from the works department.
Bypass Road Specifications and Benefits
The 6.72-km-long bypass road will be developed as a two-lane route featuring two flyovers and one underpass, designed to bypass Aska town entirely to reduce traffic congestion. Out of the total cost, Rs 37.43 crore has been earmarked for land acquisition, sources revealed.
The three bridges, which will facilitate connectivity between NH-157 and NH-59, will be constructed under the Setu Bandhan scheme, funded by the Central Road Infrastructure Fund for the fiscal year 2025-26.
Local Reactions and Expected Impact
Aska MLA Saroj Padhy welcomed the sanction of these road and bridge projects, emphasizing their potential to alleviate traffic congestion in the town and mitigate flood problems. He also highlighted that the proposed four-lane green road from Berhampur to Aska will shorten the distance between the two towns, improving overall accessibility in Ganjam district.
This infrastructure initiative is expected to boost economic activities, enhance safety, and provide a more efficient transportation network for residents and businesses in the area.
