In a significant event aimed at bolstering public welfare, Tamil Nadu's Information and Publicity Minister, M P Saminathan, distributed government benefits worth a substantial Rs 5.83 crore to 574 beneficiaries in Udhagamandalam (Ooty) on Monday. The distribution was organized to commemorate the 72nd All India Cooperative Week, underscoring the government's commitment to cooperative development and public support.
Celebrating Cooperative Spirit with Substantial Aid
Addressing the gathering on this occasion, Minister Saminathan highlighted the importance of the Cooperative Week, which is observed annually from November 14 to 20. He revealed a remarkable achievement of the state government, stating that over the preceding four years, a total of 39,231 individuals have been relieved of their financial burdens through the waiver of various loans. This comprehensive waiver included agricultural loans, gold loans, and loans extended to self-help groups, providing significant economic relief at the grassroots level.
Detailed Breakdown of Financial Assistance
The event in Ooty saw a targeted distribution of funds across different beneficiary groups. A crucial segment of this aid was directed towards the agricultural community, with twelve beneficiaries receiving crop loans adding up to Rs 7.74 lakh. In a major push for women's empowerment and financial independence, loans amounting to Rs 5.33 crore were granted to 47 Self-Help Groups (SHGs). These SHGs collectively represent 483 women, enabling them to pursue entrepreneurial ventures and strengthen their household economies.
Furthermore, providing support for social milestones, the state's marriage assistance programme proved beneficial for 34 individuals, who received a combined sum of Rs 15.25 lakh to help cover marriage-related expenses.
Recognition for Excellence in Cooperative Sector
The event was not only about distribution but also about appreciation. Cooperative societies and banks operating within the Nilgiris district that demonstrated outstanding performance in their operations were duly recognized and awarded prizes. Adding to this, the minister, M P Saminathan, personally honoured exceptional officials and staff members from these cooperative organizations. They were presented with shields and certificates as a token of gratitude for their dedicated service and contribution to the cooperative movement.
The ceremony was graced by the presence of notable dignitaries, including Chief Whip K Ramachandran and A Raja, the Member of Parliament representing the Nilgiris constituency, signifying the cross-functional political support for such welfare initiatives.
