Goa's Saleri Village Poised for Major Upgrade as Modern Fishing Center
The fisheries department in Goa has unveiled an ambitious blueprint to transform Saleri village, located in the Canacona region, into a fully integrated and contemporary fishing village. This significant development initiative is being executed under the central government's flagship program, the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), which aims to revolutionize India's fisheries sector.
Comprehensive Infrastructure Development Plan
The project encompasses a wide array of critical infrastructure enhancements designed to boost the local fishing industry's efficiency and productivity. Key components include the comprehensive repair of the existing fishing ramp, which is essential for the smooth launching and retrieval of fishing vessels. Additionally, the plan calls for the complete reconstruction of a net mending shed, providing fishermen with a dedicated space to maintain and repair their fishing nets, thereby reducing downtime and increasing operational readiness.
Desilting activities are also a major part of the project, aimed at improving water flow and accessibility in the area. The most notable feature is the installation of a substantial floating jetty, measuring approximately 40 meters in length and 3 meters in width. This modern facility will significantly ease boat access and docking operations along the Saleri river.
Enhanced Facilities and Operational Ease
To further streamline fishing activities, the plan includes the provision of a floating pontoon and gangway facilities. These additions are expected to facilitate smoother and safer boarding and disembarking processes for fishermen, enhancing overall operational safety and efficiency. The total built-up area proposed for these new structures is about 140 square meters, with the ramp development and refurbishment efforts covering an extensive area of over 200 square meters.
Regulatory Clearance and Next Steps
Currently, the project is under active consideration for a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority (GCZMA). This regulatory approval is a crucial step to ensure that all development activities comply with environmental and coastal zone regulations, safeguarding the region's ecological balance while promoting sustainable growth in the fisheries sector.
Once implemented, this transformative project is set to provide a substantial boost to the local economy by modernizing fishing infrastructure, creating employment opportunities, and enhancing the livelihoods of the fishing community in Saleri village. It represents a strategic move towards achieving the broader goals of the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana, which focuses on sustainable development and increased productivity in India's fisheries and aquaculture sectors.
