CM Stalin Launches Major Reservoir Project to Address Chennai's Water Needs

Chief Minister M K Stalin inaugurated the Mamallan reservoir project on Monday. He laid the foundation stone at Nemmeli on the East Coast Road in Chengalpattu district. This Water Resources Department initiative carries a budget of Rs 342.60 crore.

The project specifically targets Chennai's rapidly expanding southern suburbs. It aims to significantly improve their water supply situation.

Stalin Emphasizes Historical Significance of Water Management

Speaking at the event, Stalin highlighted the critical importance of water management. He stated that managing water resources holds equal weight to financial management for any nation.

"Water management is as important as financial management for a country," Stalin declared. He connected the project to ancient Tamil cultural practices. "It is part of ancient Tamil culture for habitations to come up around waterbodies."

The Chief Minister expressed confidence in the project's legacy. "This project will be known in history as one that benefitted Chennai's growing areas."

Drawing Inspiration from Pallava Heritage

Stalin recalled the historical efforts of the Pallava dynasty. He noted they created 39 lakes in the Kancheepuram region during their rule. This was done to ensure water security for the population.

The Pallavas also established a dedicated system for maintaining these lakes. Stalin explained the naming choice for the new reservoir. Pallava ruler Narasimhavarman I was famously known as 'Mamallan'. He founded the historic town of Mamallapuram.

"Since the new reservoir is coming up near the region, it is appropriate to name it the Mamallan reservoir," Stalin added.

Countering Political Criticism on Water Projects

The Chief Minister addressed recent criticism against his government. He pointed out that some individuals have spread misinformation. They claimed the DMK government did not construct any reservoirs.

"Some people, despite knowing the truth, and others without knowing the truth, have been spreading lies," Stalin stated. He provided concrete data to refute these claims.

Between 1967 and 2011, during previous DMK administrations, the state built 43 reservoirs. Stalin read out the names of all these reservoirs during his speech. He presented this list to firmly rebut the allegations.

Listing Government Achievements in Water Sector

Stalin detailed his administration's accomplishments in water management over the past five years. He highlighted the consistent and timely opening of the Mettur dam. This action has provided crucial water for agriculture.

The government initiated restoration projects in the Cauvery delta. These projects have directly benefited farmers across the region. Significant infrastructure work has also been undertaken.

Key works completed include:

  • 121 check dam constructions
  • 63 anaicut (weir) works
  • Desilting of over 40,000 lakes
  • Cleaning of 1.3 lakh kilometers of drains

Furthermore, the Thamirabarani–Karumeniyar–Nambiyar interlinking canal project launched in February last year. This represents a major step in river linking for better water distribution.

Technical Details of the Mamallan Reservoir Project

Stalin explained the project's location and mechanics. The reservoir will come up in the Kovalam basin. It covers areas between Thiruporur and Thirukazhukundram along the ECR–OMR corridor.

The primary function involves preventing surplus water from Manamathi lake from draining into the sea. Instead, this water will be stored between Thiruvandandhai and Kokilamedu.

The reservoir's specifications are impressive:

  • Spread over 5,100 acres of land
  • Storage capacity of 1.65 TMC (thousand million cubic feet)
  • Features a 34-kilometer-long bund
  • Will supply 170 million litres of water per day

Widespread Benefits for Chennai's Southern Region

The project promises substantial benefits for a large population. It will directly serve areas including Sholinganallur, Medavakkam, and Pallikaranai. Siruseri, Thiruporur, and Mamallapuram will also gain from the improved supply.

Approximately 13 lakh people across these regions will receive better water access. The reservoir offers an additional crucial advantage. It will help prevent seawater intrusion into freshwater sources.

A 15-kilometer stretch of the Buckingham canal will undergo restoration. This work will specifically benefit local fishing communities. The government has assured that fishing rights in the area will be protected and ensured.

The Mamallan reservoir project stands as a major infrastructure push. It addresses both immediate water shortages and long-term sustainability for Chennai's growth.
