Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay on Thursday announced a 2% increase in dearness allowance (DA) for state government employees and teachers, raising it from 58% to 60%. The revision will take effect retrospectively from January 1 of this year.
Beneficiaries of the DA Hike
The move is expected to benefit approximately 16 lakh state government employees, pensioners, and family pensioners across Tamil Nadu. In an official statement, Vijay said, 'The revised DA structure will benefit state government employees and teachers.'
Rationale Behind the Revision
The chief minister emphasized the crucial role played by government employees and teachers in implementing welfare schemes and delivering public services. He noted that the revised DA aligns with the Union government's revision for central employees.
'Government employees and teachers are the backbone of our administration, ensuring that welfare schemes reach every citizen. This hike is a recognition of their contributions,' Vijay added.
Financial Implications
The DA hike will result in an additional annual expenditure of ₹1,230 crore for the state exchequer. The government has assured that the necessary additional allocation will be made, keeping in mind the welfare of employees, teachers, pensioners, and family pensioners.
This decision comes as part of the state's ongoing efforts to support its workforce amid rising living costs. The revision is expected to provide financial relief to a large segment of the population dependent on government salaries and pensions.
