Tamil Nadu farmers urge Vijay to fulfill election promises

A farmers' association in Trichy has called on Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president Joseph Vijay to deliver on his election promises to the farming community without delay. The Tamil Nadu Kaviri Vivasaayigal Paathukappu Sangam, in a letter congratulating Vijay on his party's electoral victory, urged him to take immediate action on key commitments made during the campaign.

Key demands from the farmers' body

The association's secretary, 'Swamimalai' Vimalanathan, reminded Vijay of his specific pledges, which include procuring paddy at Rs 3,500 per quintal and sugarcane at Rs 4,500 per quintal, along with a complete waiver of crop loans taken by farmers. "Farmers across Tamil Nadu voted for you trusting these promises. We have not forgotten them," Vimalanathan stated in the letter.

Emotional connection with the farming community

The sangam highlighted Vijay's strong emotional bond with farmers, recalling his campaign speeches where he acknowledged understanding their pain and struggles. The association stressed that the first official file signed after taking the oath of office should be an announcement implementing these commitments.

Vimalanathan pointed out that similar precedents have been set by chief ministers in Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka, who prioritized farmer welfare upon assuming power. The farmers' body expects no less from Vijay, given his promises during the election trail.

The association's appeal underscores the high expectations from the farming community, which played a crucial role in TVK's victory. Farmers now look forward to tangible benefits that address their long-standing grievances, including price assurance and debt relief.
