Telangana Government Unveils Special EV Discounts for Employees to Accelerate Electric Mobility
In a significant move to promote sustainable transportation, the Telangana government has introduced a new initiative offering special incentives for its employees, including substantial discounts on electric vehicles from leading manufacturers. This program is designed to position government staff as early adopters and brand ambassadors for electric vehicle usage throughout the state.
Launch Event and Key Participants
The initiative was formally launched at the secretariat by Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar, alongside Chief Secretary Ramkrishna Rao and DGP Shivadhar Reddy. During the event, Minister Prabhakar highlighted the collaboration with major companies such as Mahindra Electric, Ather Energy, Gravton Motors, and Ola Electric, which have agreed to provide discounts ranging from 10% to 20% for government employees.
Broader EV Policy and Achievements
This effort is part of Telangana's comprehensive electric vehicle policy, which aims to reduce pollution and foster sustainable transport solutions. The government has already implemented measures such as waiving 100% road tax and registration charges for electric vehicles. Since the policy's introduction, over 1.15 lakh electric vehicles have been registered in the state, resulting in a revenue foregone of approximately Rs 925.94 crore to support adoption.
According to Prabhakar, electric vehicle usage in Telangana has increased from 0.6% to 1.5% following the policy rollout. The government is actively working to expand charging infrastructure across both urban and rural areas to ensure seamless adoption. Plans include deploying more electric buses and encouraging the retrofitting of diesel autos into electric vehicles.
Targets and Infrastructure Development
Chief Secretary Ramkrishna Rao emphasized the government's focus on large-scale electrification of urban transport. This includes developing a 2,000-kilometer clean mobility network under the CURE initiative. With nearly 30% of the state's population concentrated in Hyderabad, officials stressed the urgency of addressing air pollution through cleaner transport alternatives.
Additional Measures and Reforms
The government has also directed all departments to prioritize electric vehicles for official use, whether through direct procurement or hiring models. Furthermore, reforms in the transport department are underway, including vehicle scrappage for those older than 15 years and integration with the Vahan and Sarathi portals. These changes are expected to streamline processes and support the transition to electric mobility.
Global Positioning and Future Goals
Officials stated that Telangana is positioning itself among global leaders in electric mobility adoption, such as Norway and China. The state is intensifying efforts to build a cleaner and more sustainable transport ecosystem, aiming to set a benchmark for other regions in India and beyond.
