Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Thursday said the May installment of the monthly assistance of Rs 1,000 to women beneficiaries under the Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thittam (Kalaignar Women's Rights Scheme) will be disbursed soon. Addressing the media in Chennai, Stalin said the scheme, which was launched in March 2024, has been a game-changer for women in the state.
Beneficiaries to receive Rs 1,000 for May
The chief minister stated that the May installment will be credited to the bank accounts of eligible women beneficiaries shortly. The scheme currently covers over 1.07 crore women across Tamil Nadu. Stalin urged women who have not yet enrolled to apply through the nearest e-Seva centers or common service centers.
Scheme details and eligibility
The Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thittam provides monthly financial assistance of Rs 1,000 to women heads of families. Eligibility criteria include women aged 21 years and above, belonging to families with an annual income of less than Rs 2.5 lakh. The scheme excludes government employees, income tax payees, and beneficiaries of similar central or state schemes.
Government's commitment to women empowerment
Stalin reiterated the state government's commitment to women's empowerment and financial independence. He said the scheme has helped millions of women meet their daily needs and contribute to their family's well-being. The chief minister also thanked the officials for the smooth implementation of the scheme.
The announcement comes amid the ongoing model code of conduct for the Lok Sabha elections. However, the election commission has allowed the disbursal of benefits under existing schemes. The state government has set aside Rs 12,000 crore annually for this scheme.
