UP Deputy CM Maurya Addresses Irrigation and Storage Challenges at International Agriculture Conference
In a significant address at an international conference in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya highlighted the critical issues of irrigation and storage that are leading to substantial wastage of agricultural produce in the state. Speaking as the chief guest at the four-day event, Maurya underscored the urgent need for research and infrastructure improvements to enhance crop quality and support farmers.
Fertile Land but Inadequate Infrastructure
Maurya pointed out that Uttar Pradesh boasts some of the most fertile land in the country, capable of producing a diverse range of crops. However, he lamented that a significant portion of this produce is wasted due to insufficient irrigation facilities and storage problems. "The need of the hour is to undertake research on how to enhance the quality of our products so that they can be exported and farmers receive fair prices," he stated, emphasizing the potential for economic growth through agricultural exports.
Conference Focus on Sustainable Agriculture and Food Security
The conference, titled 'Pathogens, Plant Health and Food Security: Climate Resilient Agriculture and Landscape Conservation', is being jointly organized by the Amity Food and Agriculture Foundation (AFAF), Amity University's Lucknow campus, and the Indian Society of Mycology and Plant Pathology (ISMPP). It has gathered eminent scientists from around the world to deliberate on key issues such as:
- Sustainable agriculture practices
- Food security in the face of climate change
- Landscape conservation techniques
This platform aims to foster the exchange of ideas and innovative solutions to global agricultural challenges.
Government Initiatives and Future Directions
Maurya praised the efforts of the 'double engine' government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, noting steady progress towards the sustainable development of farmers and agriculture in Uttar Pradesh. "Efforts are also being made to improve the quality of agricultural and other products so that they can reach global markets through initiatives like One District One Product," he added, highlighting ongoing schemes designed to boost local economies and enhance market access.
The deputy chief minister's remarks come at a time when agricultural productivity and farmer welfare are high on the state's agenda, with a focus on leveraging technology and research to overcome existing hurdles.
