Uttar Pradesh Government Amplifies Rural Women Empowerment Initiative
The Uttar Pradesh state government is significantly expanding the scope and reach of its flagship Livelihood Mission, with a clear strategic objective to dramatically increase the number of women enrolled in self-help groups (SHGs) across rural areas. A comprehensive, district-wide campaign has been officially launched with the ambitious goal of bringing every single ration card-holding family in the villages under the direct ambit of this transformative initiative.
Targeting Half the Village Population
State authorities are actively developing a robust entrepreneurial network specifically designed for rural regions, with the explicit target of bringing approximately half of the total village population—with a sharp focus on women—within its supportive fold. In the Prayagraj district alone, out of a total of 7.5 lakh ration cardholders, the government plans to integrate 5 lakh women ration cardholders into the program's framework. This substantial segment of the population, which has traditionally been confined to domestic chores and agricultural fieldwork, will now receive structured support and resources to actively pursue avenues of self-employment and business ownership.
Official Statements on Economic Self-Reliance
Gulab Chandra, the Deputy Commissioner for the National Rural Livelihood Mission in Prayagraj, provided detailed insight into the program's mechanics. He emphasized that women ration card holders in the district, once successfully linked to established self-help groups, will gain the tools and training necessary for self-employment. This empowerment is projected to be a key factor in helping them overcome persistent financial hardships and achieve greater economic stability for their families.
Officials further elaborated that through the campaign launched under the National Rural Livelihood Mission, the Yogi Adityanath-led government is systematically connecting women with these SHGs. These groups receive dedicated budgetary support from the state, which is then utilized to help women establish, manage, and sustainably run small-scale businesses and enterprises within their own villages and communities.
Training in High-Value Sectors
The training curriculum for enrolled women is notably diverse and focused on high-value, marketable sectors. Participants receive specialized instruction and skill development in areas such as:
- Textiles and garment making
- Handicrafts and traditional arts
- Food processing and preservation
- Dairy farming and animal husbandry
- Beauty product formulation and salon services
- Organic farming and sustainable agriculture
This multifaceted training approach is transforming these women into a defining and driving force of the revitalized rural economy, moving beyond subsistence to value creation.
Current Success and Future Ambitions
The initiative has already demonstrated remarkable traction. In Prayagraj district, preliminary reports indicate that over 3 lakh rural women have already joined the movement and are actively participating. On a statewide scale, the achievements are even more impressive, with more than 1.06 crore (10.6 million) women across Uttar Pradesh having achieved a measurable degree of economic self-reliance by joining these self-help groups. Building on this momentum, the state government has set an ambitious target to increase this number to 3 crore (30 million) by the conclusion of the current calendar year, marking a massive scaling of rural women's economic participation.
