Uttar Pradesh Public Works Department Sets New Financial Benchmark

The Public Works Department (PWD) of Uttar Pradesh has established a remarkable financial achievement by spending 86% of its allocated budget during the last fiscal year. This represents the highest expenditure rate ever recorded by the department, marking a significant milestone in the state's infrastructure development efforts.

Record-Breaking Financial Performance

According to official data, the department successfully utilized Rs 28,087 crore out of a total budget allocation of Rs 32,676 crore for the fiscal year. This 86% spending rate demonstrates substantial improvement in financial execution compared to previous years. An official from the department emphasized that this achievement reflects a concentrated focus on upgrading and expanding Uttar Pradesh's infrastructure network.

Major Infrastructure Projects Underway

Between April 1, 2025, and March 31, 2026, the department made significant progress in augmenting the state's road infrastructure. A substantial portion of the funds, specifically Rs 6,877 crore, was allocated to constructing bridges over railway crossings, major traffic junctions, and various waterbodies across Uttar Pradesh.

Currently, construction work is actively progressing on 277 bridges at various stages of completion throughout the state. To enhance connectivity and reduce travel time between towns in eastern UP, Bundelkhand, central UP, and other regions, the department dedicated Rs 4,520 crore specifically for constructing at least two-lane-wide bridges over rivers during the previous year.

Comparative Analysis with Previous Fiscal Year

The current fiscal performance shows marked improvement compared to the 2024-25 financial year, when the Uttar Pradesh PWD spent Rs 23,850 crore. Notably, bridge construction received significantly increased funding, with Rs 6,877 crore allocated this year versus only Rs 1,129 crore spent on bridges during the previous fiscal period.

Leadership and Policy Framework

Principal Secretary of the department, Ajay Chauhan, attributed these achievements to multiple factors. He credited the success to the development-oriented policy framework established by the state government, maintained financial discipline, and the dedicated efforts of engineering staff and other department members.

Maintaining Uttar Pradesh's Extensive Road Network

Uttar Pradesh boasts an extensive road network spanning approximately 2.84 lakh kilometres, which includes 7,735 kilometres of national highways. To preserve this vast infrastructure, field officials invested Rs 7,650 crore in maintenance, restoration, and repair works throughout the fiscal year.

Quality Assurance Measures

To ensure the quality of construction work and verify the characteristics of materials used in roads, buildings, bridges, and civil projects, PWD officials implemented rigorous quality control measures. During field inspections, they collected 2,723 samples for testing and analysis, demonstrating the department's commitment to maintaining high construction standards across all infrastructure projects.
