Major Expressway Collision in Unnao Leaves 10 Injured, Four Critical
A serious multi-vehicle accident occurred on the Agra-Lucknow Expressway in Unnao district on Wednesday morning, resulting in injuries to at least ten individuals, with four of them in critical condition. The incident unfolded when a trailer driver reportedly fell asleep at the wheel, leading to a catastrophic chain-reaction collision involving four vehicles.
Sequence of the Accident
According to police reports, the trailer was traveling from Agra towards Lucknow when the driver dozed off, causing the vehicle to lose control. The out-of-control trailer breached the central railing and entered the opposite lane, where it first collided with an 18-wheeler truck. Subsequently, a double-decker bus carrying 49 passengers crashed into the trailer, followed by a pickup vehicle that rear-ended the bus.
Emergency Response and Rescue Operations
Sanjeev Kumar Kushwaha, the in-charge of Auras police station, along with personnel from the Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA), promptly arrived at the scene. The injured were immediately transported to the nearest community health centre for initial treatment.
"A total of 10 injured people were taken to the CHC, of whom four patients were referred to the King George's Medical College in Lucknow," stated Kushwaha, highlighting the severity of some injuries.
Traffic Clearance and Investigation
Police and UPEIDA teams worked diligently to clear the wreckage from the expressway, utilizing a crane to remove the damaged vehicles and restore normal traffic flow. The investigation into the exact cause is ongoing, with driver fatigue being cited as the primary factor.
This accident underscores the critical importance of road safety measures on high-speed expressways, particularly concerning driver alertness and adherence to traffic regulations to prevent such devastating incidents.
