Major Maoist Surrender in Telangana Deals Crippling Blow to Outfit

In a significant development for internal security, nearly 100 cadres of the banned Maoist organization have surrendered before the Telangana police. This mass surrender includes commanders and divisional committee members (DCMs), dealing a severe blow to the operational strength of the extremist group in the region.

Weapons Cache Recovered Following Intelligence from Surrendered Cadres

Acting on precise GPS coordinates provided by the surrendered individuals, security forces conducted a major operation in the Karreguttalu forest belt spanning Mulugu and Kothagudem districts. Bomb disposal teams first cleared mines from the area before specialized police units, including the elite Greyhounds, retrieved a substantial cache of weapons.

The recovered arsenal included at least 70 firearms, comprising sophisticated weapons such as AK-47 assault rifles, INSAS rifles, and SLRs. Police officials confirmed that the surrendered cadres are likely to be formally presented to the media either on Thursday or in the coming days.

Senior Leadership Among Those Who Laid Down Arms

The surrendering group represents a cross-section of the Maoist hierarchy, including:

  • Battalion and company-level commanders of the People's Liberation Guerrilla Army (PLGA)
  • Armed fighters and bodyguards
  • Support staff members
  • Several DCMs from both Telangana and neighboring Chhattisgarh

Among the senior leaders who surrendered were:

  1. Korsa Lakku – Company commander of a PLGA battalion
  2. Uike Kallu – Company platoon commander
  3. Chalasani Navatha alias Chandra – DCM in the Dandakaranya special zonal committee in Chhattisgarh
  4. Aruna – DCM rank cadre from Kothagudem district
  5. Sudhakar – DCM rank cadre from Jayashankar Bhupalpalli district

Geographic Impact and Ongoing Interrogations

Police sources revealed that with these surrenders, only an estimated 10 to 15 cadres are believed to remain active in the Karreguttalu area on the Chhattisgarh side, while a few others are suspected to be operating in Odisha and Jharkhand. This represents a dramatic reduction in Maoist presence in what was once a stronghold region.

In recent weeks, several other senior Maoist leaders have also surrendered before Telangana police, including Thippiri Tirupathi alias Devji, Malla Raji Reddy alias Sangram, Bade Chokka Rao alias Damodar, and Nune Narasimha Reddy. Officials confirmed that all surrendered leaders are currently undergoing interrogation by both state police and central agencies.

Background of Surrendered Leaders

Chalasani Navatha alias Chandra, daughter of Chalasani Prasad, served as a DCM in the Dandakaranya special zonal committee in Chhattisgarh. Her last known address was HB Colony in Visakhapatnam. Meanwhile, senior leader Muppidi Sambaiah had previously surrendered before Chhattisgarh police, indicating a pattern of diminishing Maoist leadership in the region.

This mass surrender represents one of the most significant setbacks for Maoist operations in South India in recent years and marks a potential turning point in counter-insurgency efforts in the region.
