In a significant anti-narcotics operation, personnel from the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Sribhumi police confiscated a substantial quantity of cannabis from a long-distance train in Assam on Monday. The joint team's vigilance led to the recovery of 10.35 kilograms of ganja and the subsequent arrest of three individuals, including two women.
Routine Check Turns into Major Drug Bust
The seizure was executed during a standard security inspection of the Agartala–Rani Kamlapati Fare Special train. The operation took place at the New Karimganj railway station near Silchar. Authorities reported that the behavior of three passengers in a general coach seemed dubious, prompting the team to scrutinize their luggage.
A thorough search of their bags revealed the hidden contraband. The illicit substance was cleverly concealed within their personal belongings, but the alertness of the security forces foiled the smuggling attempt.
Identities of the Accused Revealed
The police have officially named the three individuals taken into custody. They are identified as Majanu Bagbar (40), a resident of Ghazipur district in Uttar Pradesh; Saritha Devi (30) from Sahebganj in Jharkhand; and Mamata Devi (25) of Saharsa district in Bihar.
The arrest highlights the interstate nature of the drug trafficking network, with links spanning multiple northern and eastern Indian states.
Legal Action and Ongoing Investigation
Following the seizure, a formal case has been registered against the accused under the stringent Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. This law prescribes severe penalties for the possession and trafficking of illegal drugs.
Investigating officers stated that the arrested individuals are currently undergoing interrogation. The primary focus of the questioning is to uncover the source of the contraband and to identify other members involved in the wider trafficking syndicate. Police aim to dismantle the entire supply chain operating through the railway network.
