12-foot road cave-in at Bharat Nagar Chowk disrupts traffic

Ludhiana: Traffic faced significant disruption near Bharat Nagar Chowk on Friday morning after a nearly 12-foot stretch of road caved in. The cave-in occurred on the stretch leading towards the bus stand, causing immediate concern among local residents. They promptly alerted area councillor Ruchi Gulati, who then informed civic officials about the incident.

Cause of the Cave-In

Councillor Ruchi Gulati, representing ward 73, attributed the collapse to private cable wiring work. She explained that digging for cables had led to water leakage, which gradually eroded the ground beneath the road. The passage of a heavy vehicle over the weakened area likely triggered the cave-in, she added.

Response and Repairs

Teams from the Municipal Corporation's O&M and B&R wings arrived at the spot and carried out necessary repairs. Gulati noted that the incident was reported around 7 am, and repair work continued until about 6 pm, resulting in prolonged traffic snarls on this busy stretch. While the councillor stated that MC teams handled the repairs, officials maintained that the road falls under NHAI jurisdiction and that the work was carried out accordingly. The NHAI project director confirmed that the damaged service lane has been repaired.
