Major Heroin Smuggling Attempt Foiled in Jaisalmer Border Operation
In a significant breakthrough against cross-border narcotics trafficking, authorities in Rajasthan have successfully thwarted a major heroin smuggling attempt near the international border adjoining Sri Ganganagar. The operation, conducted on Sunday, was based on crucial intelligence inputs and resulted in the seizure of a substantial quantity of heroin and the arrest of four individuals.
Joint Operation Based on Intelligence Inputs
Acting on specific information received from the CID (BI) intelligence agency, the police launched a coordinated operation with the Border Security Force (BSF) in the border area falling under the limits of Karanpur police station. The intelligence indicated that a significant consignment of heroin was being smuggled into Indian territory using a drone from across the Pakistan border.
Sri Ganganagar Superintendent of Police Harishankar Yadav provided details of the operation, stating that the CID (BI) had received credible inputs about local smugglers planning to collect a heroin consignment dropped via drone in the Karanpur border area. Based on this information, immediate action was taken to intensify surveillance and conduct search operations at suspicious locations.
Substantial Narcotics Recovery and Arrests
During the meticulously planned operation, joint teams recovered a total of 12 kilograms and 167 grams of heroin from a farm field near village 19 O. The narcotics were packed in 23 packets of 500 grams each, with an estimated international market value of approximately ₹60 crore.
Four smugglers who had arrived to take delivery of the consignment were apprehended at the scene. The arrested individuals have been identified as:
- Sandeep Singh alias Buta Singh (26), resident of Village Pakki, PS Raisinghnagar, District Sri Ganganagar
- Rajendra Kumar (19), resident of 2 KDP Rawla, District Sri Ganganagar
- Balwant Singh (27), resident of Lohara, PS Gajsinghpur, District Sri Ganganagar
- Pawan Kumar, resident of Ward No. 1, Gajsinghpur, District Sri Ganganagar
Drone-Based Smuggling Method Uncovered
According to preliminary investigations, the heroin was dropped in one go by a large quadcopter drone from across the Pakistan border. This sophisticated method of narcotics trafficking highlights the evolving tactics employed by smugglers operating in the region.
In addition to the heroin, authorities also recovered plastic radium sticks and several pieces of yellow tape used in the packaging of the consignment, providing further evidence of the smuggling operation.
Legal Proceedings and Ongoing Investigation
An FIR No. 75/2026 has been registered at Sri Karanpur Police Station under Sections 8/21 of the NDPS Act. The investigation has been transferred to Police Station New Mandi Gharsana for further proceedings.
SP Harishankar Yadav, along with CID (BI) Additional SP Deeksha Kamra, is personally interrogating the accused to gather more information about the smuggling network. Preliminary findings suggest that local smugglers were acting on instructions from Pakistan-based handlers to receive the drone-dropped consignment near the Indo-Pak border.
Continued Vigilance and Coordination
A comprehensive search operation is currently underway across the border region in close coordination with the BSF. The successful operation demonstrates the effectiveness of inter-agency cooperation and intelligence sharing in combating cross-border narcotics trafficking.
The police and CID (BI) maintained strict vigilance and coordination with the BSF throughout the operation, highlighting the importance of such collaborative efforts in securing border areas against illicit activities.
