Major Drug Bust at Kochi Railway Station Ahead of Easter Holidays
In a significant crackdown on narcotics smuggling, the Government Railway Police (GRP) in Kochi seized a total of 12 kilograms of cannabis during a targeted operation at Ernakulam South railway station on Thursday. This special drive was strategically conducted in anticipation of the upcoming Easter holidays, aiming to enhance security and curb illicit activities.
Arrest and Initial Seizure
The operation was spearheaded by a dedicated team under the leadership of Sub-Inspector Nizarudheen A, who serves as the Station House Officer (SHO) of the Ernakulam railway police station. Early on Thursday morning, the team apprehended Kumud Pradhan, a 38-year-old native of Odisha, with an initial haul of 3.5 kilograms of cannabis. This arrest marked a crucial breakthrough in the investigation, highlighting the vigilance of the railway police in monitoring suspicious activities.
Expanded Search and Additional Recovery
Following the arrest, the GRP team conducted thorough searches across the railway platforms and adjoining areas of Ernakulam South station. These meticulous efforts led to the discovery of an additional 9 kilograms of cannabis, bringing the total seizure to 12 kilograms. The recovery underscores the scale of the smuggling operation and the effectiveness of the police's proactive measures in disrupting such networks.
Context of Railway Drug Smuggling
Police officials revealed that this incident is part of a broader pattern of drug trafficking via trains in the region. In the previous year alone, the Ernakulam railway police confiscated approximately 400 kilograms of cannabis smuggled through railway routes. This statistic emphasizes the persistent challenge of narcotics smuggling and the ongoing efforts by authorities to combat it, particularly during high-traffic periods like holidays.
The seizure ahead of Easter highlights the GRP's commitment to maintaining law and order, ensuring safer travel for passengers during festive seasons. Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to help curb such illegal practices in the future.
