MUMBAI: The Nirmal Nagar police have arrested 16 individuals for allegedly pelting stones at police officers during a demolition drive conducted on Wednesday outside the Bandra Railway station in eastern Mumbai, officials reported. The arrested persons were produced before the Bandra Court on Thursday. They have been booked for rioting, unlawful assembly, and obstructing a government servant from performing their duties.
Protest Turns Violent
According to police, around 150 people gathered to protest during the demolition drive before the crowd turned violent. The protesters hurled stones and paver blocks at law enforcement officers for nearly an hour before the situation was brought under control. A total of five police officers sustained severe injuries, with one suffering a fractured hand and another a broken nose after being struck by paver blocks. Additionally, ten officers received minor bruises.
Massive Police Deployment
An officer stated that over 500 police personnel, including 50 officers from the Mumbai Police and Government Railway Police, were deployed at the demolition site on Wednesday. The police bandobast continued for a second day. The Nirmal Nagar police confirmed that the situation was under control on Thursday. Civic and railway officials were in the process of clearing debris from the demolition site.
