Tragic Collision Claims Two Lives on Delhi-Mumbai Expressway
In a devastating road accident that underscores persistent safety concerns on one of India's premier highways, two individuals lost their lives and two others sustained injuries after a car violently collided with a truck on the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway. The incident occurred on Thursday near Lakshmipura village in the Vadodara district, casting a pall over the high-speed corridor.
Details of the Fatal Accident
The car involved in the collision was registered in Surat and was carrying four occupants on a journey to Ahmedabad. According to statements from a survivor provided to the authorities, the tragedy unfolded due to dangerous lane-changing and an overtaking maneuver. Umesh Virani, one of the injured survivors, recounted the moments leading to the crash. He stated, "The truck had changed lanes while our car was overtaking another truck, which is when the collision happened."
The force of the impact was catastrophic for the passengers in the front seats. Mehul Galani, 27, and Ashwin Patel, 48, both residents of Surat, were killed instantly. The two survivors, identified as Prashant Gamecha and Umesh Virani, also from Surat, miraculously escaped with injuries.
A Disturbing Pattern of Accidents
Alarmingly, this is the second such fatal incident on the same expressway within a mere 48-hour period. The Thursday's crash took place just 20 kilometers away from Saraswani village, where another tragic accident occurred on Wednesday. In that previous incident, a speeding car ran over five road maintenance workers, resulting in two fatalities and three injuries.
The deceased from Wednesday's accident were identified as Dilip Dahiya and Manoj Kumar. The driver accused in that case, Maulik Zaveri, a practicing doctor from Ankleshwar, was booked for rash and negligent driving. Police reports indicated that Zaveri lost control of his vehicle while en route to Bharuch.
These back-to-back tragedies on the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway have raised serious questions about road safety protocols, driver discipline, and the need for enhanced traffic management on this critical infrastructure link. The recurring nature of such incidents highlights an urgent need for authorities to implement stricter enforcement and public awareness campaigns to prevent further loss of life.
