Police in Kerala's Ernakulam district have taken strong action against a group of twenty individuals following a violent altercation linked to Christmas celebrations. The incident, which resulted in serious injuries to an elderly couple, has sent shockwaves through the local community in Kanayannur.
Violent Dispute Over Carol Payment Receipt
The trouble began on Tuesday night around 9:30 PM at the residence of C A Thankachan (62) and his wife in Chirappatt, Nagappadi. According to the First Information Report (FIR), Thankachan had hired a group to perform Christmas carols at his home. After the performance, he paid the agreed amount but requested a proper receipt for the payment. This seemingly simple request for documentation allegedly angered the carol singers.
A Brutal Attack and Property Damage
The situation escalated dangerously when the group, instead of providing the receipt, returned to Thankachan's property. They trespassed onto the premises and began verbally abusing the family. The verbal abuse quickly turned into a physical assault. The FIR details that the first accused struck Thankachan, causing him to lose two teeth. Another member of the group hit the elderly man on the head with a drum stick.
Thankachan's wife was also not spared and was allegedly assaulted by the mob. Not content with attacking the couple, the group then vandalized the property. They damaged several flower pots and gate lamps outside the house, causing an estimated loss of Rs 10,000.
Police Action and Legal Charges
Acting swiftly on the complaint, the Chottanikkara police have registered a case against twenty identifiable persons. The accused have been booked under various sections of the Indian Penal Code. The charges are serious and include house trespass, voluntarily causing grievous hurt, and committing obscene acts in public places. The police investigation is ongoing to identify and apprehend all individuals involved in this shocking act of violence against senior citizens.
This incident highlights a distressing breach of peace during the festive season and raises concerns about safety and dispute resolution. The local community awaits further developments as the police continue their probe into the assault on the Thankachan family.
