In a significant move against environmental violations, the Panchkula police have impounded a total of 20 vehicles involved in illegal mining activities within the district. The action, spanning from November 22 to November 29, marks a rigorous enforcement of a district-wide crackdown ordered by top officials.
Coordinated Raids and Vehicle Seizures
The enforcement drive was a multi-team effort. Personnel from the specialized Anti-Illegal Mining Unit were deployed alongside teams from the Raipur Rani Police Station. They were further reinforced by police staff from Ramgarh, Mohali, Barwala, and Maranwala. Their coordinated patrols focused on strategic routes leading to mining zones.
During the week-long operation, authorities confiscated 17 trucks, one JCB earthmover, and two tractor-trolleys that were found transporting illegally extracted materials. All seized vehicles have been formally handed over to the mining department for initiating necessary legal proceedings.
Ensuring Transparency and Zero-Tolerance Policy
To bolster their efforts, the Panchkula police, on Monday, formally requested the Directorate of Mines and Geology to deploy expert survey teams. The objective is to conduct precise checks to verify if mining operations are strictly confined within their approved lease boundaries and are adhering to sanctioned plans.
Panchkula DCP Srishti Gupta emphasized that this request aims to ensure complete transparency and regulatory compliance. "Our objective is to ensure that mining takes place strictly as per the approved plans and lease boundaries," Gupta stated. She reiterated the department's zero-tolerance policy towards illegal mining, highlighting enhanced surveillance measures.
Surveillance and Future Vigilance
The police have implemented a robust monitoring system to prevent future violations. Sensitive zones identified for illegal activities are now under constant CCTV surveillance. Furthermore, surprise raids are being conducted regularly by police teams. Commando units and flying squads have been placed on a 24x7 alert to intercept any suspicious vehicles moving near mining sites.
This comprehensive crackdown was initiated following a high-level meeting on October 21, chaired by Police Commissioner Shibas Kabiraj. The commissioner had directed a stringent, district-wide campaign against illegal mining, and daily action reports have been submitted to his office since. Commissioner Kabiraj underscored the serious environmental risks posed by such unlawful activities, stating that illegal mining harms natural resources. He affirmed that Panchkula police are committed to protecting the environment and ensuring a safer, sustainable future for the district.
