In a disturbing incident that highlights urban safety concerns, an elderly woman was robbed of her mobile phone by two bike-borne youths at Special Park in Sector 70, Mohali. The brazen theft occurred in broad daylight, sending shockwaves through the local community and prompting immediate police action.
Details of the Daylight Robbery
The victim, identified as Vijay Lakshmi, was walking back home from the Sector 70 gaushala around 1:30 pm when the incident unfolded. According to her son Ankit Singla, a resident of Sector 70 and senior manager with Indian Oil, his mother was engaged in a conversation with her husband on her Motorola Edge 50 Fusion mobile phone at the time.
As Vijay Lakshmi reached the rear side of Special Park near the Meritorious School, one youth approached from behind and forcefully snatched her mobile phone. The elderly woman immediately raised an alarm and attempted to chase the perpetrator, but the accused managed to escape on a motorcycle along with another accomplice who was waiting nearby.
Witness Account and Police Response
Ankit Singla, who coincidentally arrived at the park around the same time, witnessed both accused fleeing from a distance. In his statement to authorities, Singla expressed confidence in his ability to identify the perpetrators, stating, "If the accused are produced before me, I can identify them."
Based on the formal complaint filed by the family, the police have registered a case under Section 304 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). A spokesperson from the Mataur police station confirmed that investigators are actively scanning CCTV footage from nearby areas and making concerted efforts to identify and apprehend the accused individuals.
Community Concerns and Safety Implications
