Odisha Court Imposes 20-Year Sentence for Heinous Crime Against Minor
In a landmark verdict, the special Pocso court in Jajpur district, Odisha, delivered justice on Wednesday by sentencing a 31-year-old man to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for the kidnapping and rape of a 14-year-old girl last year. The court, presided over by Justice Abhilash Senapati, convicted the accused under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act, highlighting the severity of the crime.

Beyond the lengthy prison term, the court imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on the convict. Failure to pay this fine will result in an additional one-year jail sentence, ensuring accountability. In a significant move to support the survivor, the court directed the Odisha State Legal Services Authority to provide a compensation of Rs 8 lakh, aimed at aiding her recovery and future well-being.

According to prosecution details, the horrific incident began on July 19, 2025, when the accused kidnapped the minor girl. Over the course of more than a week, she was subjected to rape at multiple locations, causing immense trauma. The survivor's mother promptly lodged a complaint at the local police station, leading to the swift arrest of the accused. Police filed a chargesheet, paving the way for a thorough legal process.

During the trial, a total of 15 witnesses, including the brave survivor herself, were examined to build a robust case. Special public prosecutor Srinibash Sahu emphasized that the court relied heavily on eyewitness testimonies and compelling medical evidence to establish guilt.
