A 21-year-old man died after a bus allegedly struck the scooter he was riding while attempting to overtake it near Dhobi Ghat under Galta Gate police station area on Friday night. Two youths accompanying him sustained minor injuries, according to police.
Victim Identified
The deceased has been identified as Mohammad Rais, a resident of Futa Khurra in Ramganj and son of Mumtaz Ali. Police reported that Rais was returning home from Galta Gate with two friends on a scooter around 9:45 pm when the accident occurred.
Details of the Incident
According to police, a Punjab-registered bus was moving alongside the scooter when its driver allegedly attempted to overtake the two-wheeler from the driver's side. As the road curved near Dhobi Ghat, the bus reportedly swerved during the maneuver and hit the scooter.
Rais allegedly became trapped between the bus tire and the road divider, suffering critical injuries. His two companions fell onto the road after the scooter lost balance and sustained minor injuries.
Response and Investigation
Passers-by informed the police, following which a team from Galta Gate police station arrived at the scene and transported the injured to SMS Hospital. Doctors declared Rais dead on arrival, while the two injured individuals were discharged after treatment. Police moved the body to the SMS Hospital mortuary for an autopsy on Saturday.
The bus involved in the accident has been seized, and efforts are underway to locate the driver, who fled the scene after the crash. A case has been registered, and further investigation is ongoing.
