A 21-year-old man impersonating an Indian Army brigadier was apprehended in Uttar Pradesh's Lucknow district on Tuesday. The accused, identified as Ravi Kumar, a resident of Bihar, was arrested near a shopping complex in the Gomti Nagar area. He had been flaunting a fake military uniform and insignia to gain undue influence and financial benefits.
How the imposter was exposed
The arrest followed a tip-off from a vigilant shopkeeper who grew suspicious of Kumar's behavior. The shopkeeper noticed inconsistencies in his demeanor and uniform details, prompting him to alert the local police. Upon arrival, officers questioned the man and discovered he could not provide valid identification or military credentials. A subsequent investigation revealed that the uniform and medals were purchased from a local market.
Police action and investigation
The police seized the fake uniform, insignia, and other paraphernalia. Kumar has been booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code for cheating, impersonation, and fraud. Authorities are probing whether he had previously duped others using the same ruse. This incident highlights the need for public vigilance against such imposters who exploit the respect for the armed forces.
Senior Superintendent of Police, Gomti Nagar, stated: "We commend the alert citizen who reported this. Such impersonations undermine the integrity of our military. We urge the public to verify credentials and report suspicious individuals."
Kumar is currently in judicial custody pending further investigation. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of community awareness in preventing fraud.
