A 23-year-old lawyer named Priyanshu Srivastava died by suicide on Thursday afternoon by jumping from the fifth floor of the district court building in Kanpur's Kotwali area, according to police reports.
Incident Details
CCTV footage obtained by the police showed Priyanshu speaking on his mobile phone shortly before taking the step. Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Satyajit Gupta, who arrived at the scene, stated that after Priyanshu's death, his smartphone displayed a suicide note posted as a WhatsApp status. Authorities are still trying to identify the person he was speaking to at that time.
Upon receiving information about the suicide at the court premises, police from multiple stations reached the location. Priyanshu was rushed to Ursula Hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.
Family and Investigation
The DCP mentioned that Priyanshu's father was contacted but was unable to speak. He added that a case would be registered if a written complaint is submitted by the family.
Police sources revealed that the suicide note detailed Priyanshu's prolonged struggles and mental anguish. He wrote that although he completed his LLB in 2016, he was unable to clear the PCSJ exam. The note highlighted ongoing stress due to financial hardships, his father's poor health, the burden of family responsibilities, and difficult conditions at home. Priyanshu admitted that he kept his troubles to himself and clarified that no one else was responsible for his death. He further requested that after his passing, no one should trouble his mother or cause her any distress because of him.
