Major Gold Smuggling Bust at Mumbai Airport: 26 Kenyan Nationals Arrested
In a significant crackdown on international smuggling operations, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has apprehended 26 Kenyan nationals for allegedly attempting to smuggle a substantial quantity of gold into India. The operation, which unfolded at Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, resulted in the seizure of 29.4 kilograms of gold valued at approximately Rs 37.7 crore.
Intelligence-Led Operation at Terminal 2
Acting on precise intelligence inputs and advanced digital profiling techniques, DRI officials meticulously planned their surveillance at Terminal 2 of the airport. The authorities had received specific information regarding the arrival of the suspected smugglers on Wednesday, prompting them to position themselves strategically within the terminal.
Given the heavy flow of passenger traffic typical at this major international hub, officers opted to monitor the suspects discreetly near the arrival area designated for flight KQ 202 from Nairobi. Their tactical plan involved intercepting the individuals after they had crossed the green channel, which is reserved for passengers with no dutiable goods to declare.
The Interception and Subsequent Searches
Around 11:00 AM, the group of passengers approached the green channel as anticipated. However, upon noticing the presence of officials, they abruptly changed course and moved away from the designated area. This suspicious behavior immediately triggered the DRI team to initiate questioning.
During the initial verification process, 25 of the passengers provided identification, while the 26th individual was discovered to have been previously detained by airport authorities for attempting to use a counterfeit passport. All 25 individuals vehemently denied carrying any contraband items.
Despite their denials, a thorough search of two passengers led to the dramatic recovery of gold bars cleverly concealed within their shoes. This discovery confirmed the officials' suspicions and escalated the investigation.
Recovery of Additional Gold and Evasive Tactics
As the situation intensified, some members of the group began discarding objects wrapped in black tape near the luggage conveyor belts in an apparent attempt to dispose of evidence. DRI officials swiftly recovered multiple pouches from these areas, which contained melted gold bars of substantial value.
"None of the individuals claimed ownership of the recovered gold items, further complicating the investigation," stated a senior DRI official involved in the operation. The official emphasized that the sophisticated concealment methods and coordinated attempts to evade detection pointed to a well-organized smuggling network.
The total haul of 29.4 kg of gold, with an estimated market value of Rs 37.7 crore, represents one of the larger seizures in recent months at Indian airports. The DRI is now conducting detailed interrogations to uncover the broader network behind this smuggling attempt, including potential domestic receivers and international connections.
