RAMGARH: A peaceful morning turned violent in Jharkhand's Ramgarh district on Tuesday when local residents launched a aggressive protest against the planned reopening of a stone quarry, resulting in three police personnel sustaining injuries from stone-pelting.
Intense Confrontation Erupts
The situation escalated rapidly when a police team arrived at the quarry site in Gidi Block to facilitate its reopening following court directives. Local villagers, who have been opposing the mining operations for environmental and displacement concerns, gathered in large numbers and began hurling stones at the security personnel.
"The locals were adamant about not allowing the quarry to operate," said a senior police official present at the scene. "Despite repeated appeals for peaceful dialogue, they resorted to violence, leaving three of our personnel with significant injuries."
Background of the Conflict
The quarry operations had been suspended following previous protests from the community. However, recent court orders mandated the resumption of mining activities, putting local authorities in a difficult position between implementing judicial directives and addressing community concerns.
Local residents argue that the quarry operations have led to:
- Environmental degradation and pollution
- Damage to agricultural lands
- Health hazards from dust particles
- Displacement threats to local communities
Police Response and Current Situation
Following the violent clash, additional police forces have been deployed in the area to maintain law and order. The injured personnel have been shifted to a nearby hospital for medical treatment, with officials confirming they are in stable condition.
"We are monitoring the situation closely and attempting to initiate talks with community leaders," stated the District Superintendent of Police. "While we understand local concerns, violence cannot be justified as a means of protest."
The district administration has called for an emergency meeting with stakeholders from both sides to find an amicable solution to the ongoing dispute, balancing developmental activities with environmental protection and community welfare.
