Three Lives Lost in Separate Chennai Road Accidents
Chennai witnessed a tragic Friday as three people, including a young nurse, lost their lives in separate road accidents across the city. The incidents have once again highlighted the pressing issue of road safety in urban India. While one victim died on the spot, another person remains in critical condition, fighting for his life in hospital.
Young Nurse's Tragic Morning Commute
The first tragedy struck around 6am in Otteri Thideer Nagar when Deepika, a 22-year-old nurse from Perambur, was riding to work at a private hospital in Thousand Lights. According to police reports, a van transporting staff to the same hospital collided with her two-wheeler, causing her to fall off. The rear wheel of the van then ran over her, resulting in immediate death.
The victim's body was sent to Government Kilpauk Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examination. Police have arrested the van driver, identified as Sreenivasan, and are investigating the circumstances that led to this fatal collision during what should have been a routine morning commute.
Fatal Crash on 100-Feet Road
In a separate incident at Taramani's 100-Feet Road, 27-year-old Lokeshwaran died after losing control of his motorcycle and ramming into the road median. The impact caused fatal head injuries that proved catastrophic. The pillion rider, Manikandan, survived the crash but sustained serious injuries and has been admitted to the critical care unit of a nearby hospital.
This accident adds to the growing concern about road infrastructure and driving habits in the city, particularly on major thoroughfares like 100-Feet Road where high speeds often combine with unexpected obstacles.
Hit-and-Run Near Neelankarai
The third fatal incident occurred near the Neelankarai RTO office, where an unidentified car struck and killed a pedestrian estimated to be around 50 years old. The victim was crossing the road when the car hit him. The driver fled the scene without stopping to help or report the accident, leaving the victim to die.
Local police have registered cases in all three incidents and are conducting investigations to determine the exact causes and identify the hit-and-run driver. The sequence of accidents on a single day has raised serious questions about road safety measures and enforcement in Chennai.
These tragic incidents serve as a grim reminder of the importance of road safety and responsible driving. As the city continues to grow and vehicle numbers increase, such accidents highlight the urgent need for better traffic management, improved road infrastructure, and greater awareness among all road users.
